09/11/2014 „Let’s collectively take care of the environment which provides us with drinking water“ – Joint cleaning action was held in Aragvi gorge
„Let’s collectively take care of the environment which provides us with drinking water” - this is a joint initiative of Tbilisi City Hall and “Georgian Water and Power“ aimed at drawing attention of general public to the importance of protecting the territories adjacent to the water supply sanitary zones.
The cleaning action organized by Tbilisi City Hall and “Georgian Water and Power“ company is going on today in Aragvi gorge, specifically in Misaktsieli village of Mtskheta municipality. Participants of the action are: mayor of Tbilisi Davit Narmania and heads of the City Hall’s various departments, minister of environment and natural resources protection of Georgia Elguja Khokrishvili, governor of Mtskheta-Mtianeti Nugzar Khipiani, director general of “Georgian Water and Power“ Giorgi Gachechiladze and other top managers of the company, director of the “Solid Wastes Management Company of Georgia” Giorgi Shukhoshvili and representatives of regional development and infrastructure ministry, chairman of self-government community of Mtskheta municipality Zurab Abesadze, employees of Mtskheta sanitary service, residents of Misaktsieli village and other volunteers.
Organizers and participants of today’s cleaning action join the “Georgia must be cleaned up of garbage” initiative of the prime minister of Georgia on the one hand and call on the community and citizens to protect from pollution Tbilisi, Mtskheta and their environs water supply sanitary zones in Aragvi gorge the on the other hand.
According to Tbilisi mayor Davit Narmania it is an important strategic place as it ensures the capital city’s water supply. „Several agencies have united today to hold a daylong sanitation action. I would like to call on the population to hold back from polluting the environment especially in the places responsible for water supply of the region and capital city.”- said Davit Narmania. General director of “Georgian Water and Power“ Giorgi Gachechiladze thanks all the agencies that have joined the collective initiative of Tbilisi City Hall and the Company to participate in the Aragvi gorge cleaning action. According to him “such actions are very important as from environmental as from Tbilisi water supply point of view, because the capital city is supplied drinking water right from Aravi gorge.” According to director of the “Solid Wastes Management Company of Georgia” Giorgi Shukhoshvili, the company has studied solid wastes spontaneous breeding grounds. “ Through this action we call on the population to treat reasonably the environment and not to pollute it. Such actions will help to heal the polluted places.”- says Giorgi Shukhoshvili. Governor of Mtkheta-Mtianeti Nugzar Kipiani expresses hope that population of Misaktsieli will be more careful to the territory adjacent to their village and will not transform it into dump. Minister of environment and natural resources protection of Georgia Elguja Khokrishvili welcomes all integrated actions aimed at cleaning the environment from household rubbish and solid wastes. According to him the Ministry has already introduced a bill on the solid wastes management to the parliament, which is likely to be passed by the end of month and makes it possible to step up monitoring over the environment pollution in the future.
Misaktsieli village is one of the places in Aragvi gorge, which is adjacent to the Choporti-Misaktsieli sanitary zone. Drinking water is supplied to Tbilisi and Mtskheta from the above-mentioned object as well as from Saguramo, Bulachauri and Natakhtari water supply systems. The action participants cleaned the village and nearby territory from household rubbish and construction waste, polyethylene bags and plastic bottles and carried over to the Kaspi dump.
